Southern Union State Community College Soccer Teams Make History in Second Season with Region Championships
OPELIKA, AL – Southern Union State Community College's (SUSCC) soccer program has made a significant impact in just its second season, as both the men's and women's teams captured their first-ever Region championships.
In a thrilling match, the Southern Union women's soccer team defeated Georgia Military College 1-0 to claim the Region 22 Championship, the first regional title in program history. The victory capped off a strong season for the Lady Bison, who finished with an overall record of 9-7-2 (.556).
Although the Lady Bison fell in the first round of the district playoffs to the eventual district winners Daytona State, their Region title marks a significant accomplishment for a young program.
"We are incredibly proud of the effort and dedication our players showed this season," said Women's Head Coach Mac Matthews. "Capturing the Region championship is a huge achievement, and it's a testament to the hard work they've put in on and off the field. We're excited about the future of Southern Union soccer."
The Southern Union men's soccer team also made history, defeating Enterprise State Community College 2-1 to win their first Region 22 Championship. With a record of 10-5-4 (.632), the men's team had a standout season under the leadership of Head Coach Taylor Jones.
Although the men's team, like the women's team, was eliminated in the first round of the district playoffs, their Region championship victory marked a defining moment for the program in its short existence.
"I'm very proud of my staff and players over these past two years as we've started the program. Their hard work and dedication have set a firm foundation for future Southern Union teams to compete for championships in the years to come," said Coach Jones.
The Women's team played in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA), while the Men's team competes in the Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC).
